Surgery Is Not The Best Answer

As we all know, many doctors are surgery-mad, but surgery often results in further complications, mainly impotence and incontinence. However, if you have a growth, there may be no other choice - except chemotherapy, which can also have detrimental side effects.

Even the newest prescription drugs have limited success in reducing an enlarged prostate and some of the side effects of these drugs are almost as bad as the prostate disorder itself.

Fortunately many doctors now agree that an enlarged prostate can be avoided or treated by giving the gland the nutrition it lacks. Tremendous progress has been made using this method, and noteworthy successes enjoyed as you will now discover.

The Prostate Needs 10 Times More Zinc Than Any Other Organ!

Enlarged prostates are much more common in developed countries, such as the UK, than in the Third World. The primary reason for this is that the majority of British meals are overcooked and processed. The processing of food destroys a good portion, if not all, of the most important nutrient needed by the prostate gland: Zinc.

Dr. Earl Mindell, Ph.D., R.Ph, (left) author of the Vitamin Bible says, "Most of the zinc in food is lost in processing or never exists in a substantial amount due to nutrient-poor soil." (Zinc is not normally replaced in the soil when fertilisers are used.)

The world famous founder of the Free Radical Theory of Ageing, Dr. Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at the University of Nebraska School of Medicine, stated, "Some 90% of the population consumes diets deficient in zinc."

The prostate uses 10 times more of this nutrient than any other organ in the body. As the production of testosterone declines, an enzyme stimulates the production of other hormones that cause enlargement. Many scientists have confirmed that when sufficient zinc is present, it helps stop that enzyme doing its damage.

Zinc Arginate Reverses Prostate Enlargement!

Dr. M.S. Fahim and others published a clinical study in a government medical journal showing that treatment with zinc arginate reduces prostate enlargement. Dr. A. Leake and Dr. G.D. Chisholm reported in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry that zinc arginate can avert the hormonal action that  causes prostate enlargement.

Irving Bush and associates at Chicago's Cook County Hospital, tested the effects of zinc on patients with BPH symptoms. All patients reported symptomatic improvements, and 75% had palpable shrinkage of the prostate.

In all, eight prominent research scientists have published studies confirming that zinc is essential for keeping your prostate healthy. Fortunately zinc  can be taken orally as a nutritional supplement without a prescription. Some doctors call zinc 'the man's vitamin'.

However, zinc alone is not the answer. If you are not getting enough of another nutrient, Vitamin B6, then taking zinc orally won't help. In the bodys complicated synthesis of nutrients into usable forms, zinc requires Vitamin B6 in order to convert it to a form readily absorbed by the prostate. According to a clinical study by Dr. P.P. Vescovi published in the Journal of Hormone Metabolism Research, a deficiency of either nutrient can cause prostate enlargement.

Testing Your Zinc Level

A simple test can show if you are zinc deficient - suck a zinc sulphate tablet or capsule (available over the counter ) and if you taste nothing as it dissolves you are deficient, if it tastes foul you have good zinc levels. We recommend a glass of water is at hand!

The Prostate Actually Needs Several Nutrients to Ensure its Proper Health!

To ensure the health of your prostate, you must give it several nutrients: certain amino acids, Serenoa serrulata, Pygeum Africanum, Panax extract and Bee Pollen to name a few. These exotic nutrients will not only keep your prostate healthy but have been shown to reduce enlarged glands in numerous research studies.

In a report published in the Journal of the Maine Medical Association, Dr, H.M. Feinblatt and and Dr. J.C. Grant conducted a double blind study of patients with enlarged prostates. Half of the patients were treated with an amino acid mixture of glycine, alanine, and glutamic acid, and the other half given a placebo. Following treatment, patients with enlarged prostates and associated urinary symptoms experienced prompt and rather spectacular relief after taking the mixture.

Research showed that within the group taking the amino acids:

-  92% of them noted a reduction in prostate size.

-  95% experienced less nocturia (need to urinate during the night).

-  81% found they had a less frequent need to urinate.

-  71% had reduced discomfort.

A subsequent American study produced very similar results. Of the 45 men who took all 3 amino acids (as compared to a control group who did not take the amino acids):

-  95% experienced less nocturia.

-  81% had a diminished sense of urgency.

-  73% said they had to urinate less often.

-  70% reported less delay in urination.

-  NONE of the subjects reported any adverse side effects / reactions.

An Aphrodisiac used by the Red Indians!

Serenoa Serrulata (Saw Palmetto) works in a similar way to zinc in the prostate, according to Dr. G. Champault in a study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Serenoa counteracts the effects of decreased testosterone in your system (a situation which allows other hormones to increase the size of your prostate). This nutrient comes from a berry produced by a particular palm species common in the south-eastern United States. Red Indian medicine men used it as a mild aphrodisiac as well as a reliever of prostate problems.

"To prevent BPH, start taking Saw Palmetto extract on a regular basis in your mid-forties. Find a product with 80mg of the most potent extract and take it twice a day," says Dr Julian Whitaker. For those who already have a prostate problem, he recommends taking 160mg to 320mg of extract each day.

Make sure your Saw Palmetto (and other ingredients) is of the quality  as used in clinical trials. Many weak and misleading formulas contain only Saw Palmetto Berry. Saw Palmetto Extract containing 85% sterols and fatty acids  (the most potent) is up to 1000 times stronger mg for mg than basic dried Saw Palmetto berry powder.

Saw Palmetto extract has been widely recognised by the U.S. & European Pharmacopoeia as a remedy for prostate problems since the early 1900's.

Saw Palmetto works on several aspects of BPH. It inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. In addition, it speeds the breakdown and  elimination of other hormones that are also believed to be responsible for prostate enlargement. Further-more, it reduces inflammation and fluid accumulation.

More than 20 double-blind placebo-controlled clinical studies have reported Saw Palmetto extract relieved all major symptoms of BPH.

A study of 563 patients who took Saw Palmetto extract for three months reported that their rate of urine flow was more than twice as great as that of patients who took Proscar for a year. Another study of 283 patients receiving Saw Palmetto reported significant relief of overall symptoms after only one month of treatment.

What's more the results showed that Saw Palmetto extract was equivalent or better in its action without the side effects associated with Proscar (impotence, loss of sex drive and abnormal ejaculation).

Of 505 patients who received Saw Palmetto in a three month trial, 88 percent of both the patients and the 112 urologists who  supervised them considered the therapy effective after forty-five and ninety days after treatment.

In 1984, Dr. G. Champault, a well known British scientist, conducted a double-blind study to show that Saw Palmetto actually counteracts the hormonal imbalances most commonly the cause of prostate enlargement.

The French Connection

An extract from a large evergreen tree, Pygeum africanum, has been shown to reduce enlarged prostate problems in as many as 66% of cases. A number of studies have confirmed the usefulness of this herb in treating BPH. It also has anti-inflammatory, anti-edema and cholesterol-lowering capabilities. The herb effectively inhibits the conversion of bound testerone and increases blood flow to the prostate ( and also penis).

Pygeum has several ingredients that are particularly beneficial to the prostate gland and has no significant side effects. It works by reducing inflammation, fluid retention and helping to repair damaged blood  vessels.

In particular Pygeum contains groups of active phytosterols  (plant fats) which include Beta Sitosterol, Campsterol and Stigmasterol.

These special plant fats lower local prostate congestion, decrease inflammation which inturn reduces the symptoms and improves peak urinary flow.

Beta-Sitosterol has been shown to be useful in cases of BPH by helping to reduce the normally elevated levels of prostaglandins.

Pygeum's usefulness in helping men with enlarged prostates has been verified in a multitude of placebo-controlled, double-blind studies in major European medical journals, including the Italian Urology Archives and Urology Wisdom and Nephrology ( the Austrian Wiener Klinische Wochenschirft (Vienna Clinical Weekly) and French journals Therapy and Annals of Urology. The reports were all highly positive.

Pygeum appears to work by inhibiting the formation of hormones known as prostaglandins that are responsible for painful inflammation of the prostate; acting as a diuretic to relieve bladder pressure; and possibly by inhibiting absorption and metabolism of prostatic cholesterol which has been suggested by some researchers as part of the BPH pathology.

In France, 81% of all prescriptions for the medical treatment of benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) contain Pygeum extract (at typically 150 mg per day).  A study reported in the Lancet concluded significant improvements in symptoms and urinary flow parameters show the effectiveness of Beta-sitosterol in the treatment of BPH, in just 30 days.

Stinging Nettles Can Be Very Helpful

The root of Stinging Nettle has five key benefits:

  • 1. It inhibits the binding of DHT to receptor cells in the prostate.

  • 2. It inhibits the 5 alpha reductor enzyme and conversion of testosterone to DHT.

  • 3. It restricts testosterone from being bound to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and thus keeps of free testosterone higher.

  • 4. It improves urinary flow, reduces residual urine retention and nocturnal frequency.

  • 5. It is beneficial in alleviating inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract.

It has been used and recommended in Germany as a treatment for BPH for decades and has several outstanding clinical studies to support its efficacy. The trials have shown not only can stinging nettle root be beneficial in its own right but it works in harmony to make Saw Palmetto and Pygeum Africanum more effective.

The Cernilton Solution

Discovered in Sweden almost half a century ago, Cernilton. Cernilton, is an extract of rye pollen, shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, relaxing muscles that surround the urethra and to inhibit growth of abnormal prostate cells. It also has been reported to improve symptoms of chronic prostatitis, as well as reducing the symptoms of BPH.

In 1988, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study concluded that Cernilton improved nocturia (excessive urination at night) in 68.8 percent of the cases, as opposed to 37.2 percent of the placebo group. In regard to residual urine, 54.7 percent of the Cernilton group showed improvement, as compared with only 12.5 percent of the placebo.

A second double-blind, placebo-controlled study, published in 1990, mirrored these results. In it, Cernilton was found to either eliminate or improve nocturia in 60 percent of the BPH patients tested. This compared with 30 percent of the subjects on the placebo. Even more impressive was the improvement in bladder emptyings57 percent of the Cernilton users vs. only 10 percent of the placebo group. All told, 69 percent of the Cernilton patients reported an overall improvement in their BPH symptoms, as compared with 29 percent in the placebo group.

No Prostate Problems and a Vibrant Sex Life!

Statistics show that Oriental men have 50% less prostate problems than men from the western world; they also boast a lively sex life that continues well into their 80s.

The Orientals herald Panax ginseng for this enviable state of affairs, and modern science has confirmed its benefits.

In a thorough study of this ancient herb at the University of Nebraska School of Medicine, scientists Fahim & Harman showed that Panax ginseng does indeed offer extraordinary powers for men. Their studies showed that it increased the production of testosterone, and in doing so, had three key benefits: Firstly, it helped reduce enlarged prostates. Secondly, it helped prevent future prostate problems, and Thirdly, it greatly enhanced the subjects' sex drive and performance.

The Nectar of Relief!

Bee Pollen is extremely rich in protein and essential fatty acids.

A report by Dr. E. Askupmark, in a Swedish medical journal published in 1961 cited several studies using Bee Pollen extract: patients with inflamed prostates showed a marked improvement, with the prostate size returning to normal over a one year period.

Similarly, a Japanese study of 30 patients suffering from acute prostatitis, showed that 16 of the 30 men who were treated  with Bee Pollen, described it as 'markedly effective'. Thirteen of the remaining 14 men enjoyed some relief, classifying the treatment as 'effective'.

A Tomato A Day

A four year Harvard Medical School study demonstrated that Lycopene, from tomatoes, was the only carotenoid that had a significant inverse relationship to prostate cancer. Lycopene has been found to be the most abundant carotenoid in the prostate gland.

Researchers found that, of the 50,000 healthy males studied, those who ate at least 10 servings of tomatoes or tomato-based products per week were 33% less likely to  develop prostate cancer than those who never ate them.

Even those who only ate tomato-based products once a week had a 23% less chance of developing prostate cancer. Researchers concluded that the active antioxidant in tomatoes, Lycopene, significantly reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

Flax Lignans - More Than Just Oil

Flax seeds and their oil has been valued for centuries and one of the primary sources for healthy oils. It is also the richest source of lignans - a group of phytonutrients (which includes the phytosterols discussed in Pygeum earlier).

Not only do Flax Lignans help block the action of the 5 alpha reductase enzyme, they also inhibit the action of other enzymes which synthesise testosterone and estrogen to its more harmful metabolites. Recently researchers at Duke University Medical school have conducted several studies looking at the effect of flaxseed on prostate cancer. In a pilot study, 25 men with prostate cancer were given a low fat diet plus flaxseed for 34 days. At the end the men had lower rates of of cancer cell growth and a trend toward lower PSA levels.

Flax Lignans also help relieve and improve, urinary flow as well as reducing the size of the enlarged prostate, oh and they help reduce hair loss too!

Essential Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds, in common with Saw Palmetto and Pygeum, contain an abundance of plant sterols, zinc and essential fatty acids, and in particular Oleic and Linoleic acid.

They are used extensively in Germany for BPH sufferers, where they have also been studied for their anti-inflammatory and anti-infection properties.

In a double-blind study on 53 men, a combination of Pumpkin Seeds and Saw Palmetto, was compared to a placebo over a three month period. The symptoms and urinary measurements significantly improved in all the treatment group.

Whilst women have to deal with problems brought on by the menopause, men have prostate disorders, which could easily be called 'the male menopause' because they are almost inevitable. Only the men who feed the prostate what it needs, can avoid these problems.

Antioxidant Magic

Experimental studies have demonstrated that the heavy metal Cadmium was found to stimulate the growth of abnormal prostate tissue. Additionally, these studies showed that the administration of adequate amounts of Selenium inhibited growth stimulation from Cadmium.

A recent study published in The Lancet (Sept 98), confirmed that a decline in Selenium intake has coincided with substantial increases in prostate cancer, even when age adjusted.

Before It's Too Late  -  Sex & Prostate Health

It is unfortunate that even with the availability of these incredible natural deterrents, most men are ignorant of their prostate problems until they become very uncomfortable. Just  as women have unique problems associated with their urinary and sexual apparatus, men have theirs - the prostate.

But there is an important difference. Women are much quicker to see a doctor for even a slight discomfort. Men should be just as concerned, because any urinary and sexual difficulties are both physically and emotionally devastating.

Regular sexual intercourse is essential to sexual health. Unfortunately a decline in sexual activity as we age is thought to to be related to a rise in prostate problems. The congestion that occurs in the prostate when it is not allowed to ejaculate, causes inflammation and the prostate gland suffers with the associated swelling.
